Air Source Heat Pumps
Air Source Heat pump moves heat rather than converting it from a fuel.
Provides a very cost-effective heating source in Richmond.
Can deliver one-and-a-half to three times more heat energy than the electricity it consumes.
Virginia has one of the lowest rates for electricity in the country.
The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) rates a heat pump's cooling efficiency and the Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) rates the heating efficiency.
The unit with the higher rating will be more efficient. The ENERGY STAR ® label, is awarded to those units with SEERs of 12 or greater and HSPFs of 7 or greater.
Energy savings can return the higher initial investment several times during the heat pump's life.
Do not generally perform well over extended periods of sub-freezing temperatures, requires additional heat source.
When outdoor temperatures fall below 40°F, electric resistance coils, kicks in to provide indoor heating. Some units have gas-fired backup furnaces. Solar thermal can feed fan coils or radiant floors with hot water to add heat to the living space.
